On August 30, 2022
by 卓 坂牛

I finally got Kazuo Shinohara’s doctoral dissertation, which was not even in the National Diet Library. I read on the plane. There are three conclusions, the most famous being
“The composition of Japanese architecture is division, the composition of Western architecture is connection”
The second is
“Relationship between roof and base, surrounding edge, floor height and roof height”
the third is
“Japanese architecture has frontality”
Quite a large amount of materials (It says that this material was selected by Profesor Hirai, who was his senior, but I imagine that this paper would not have been possible without Mr. Hirai.)

To be honest, I thought it was a logical development with strong subjectivity peculiar to Professor Shinohara, but after reading it, I was fully convinced. I thought that this was a pretty wonderful theory of Japanese architecture when it was made into a book. not historical though.

When I saw my email in Dubai, I got an email from Enric. I asked the Japanese immigration office what term would be appropriate for his purpose of stay and forwarded the e-mail to the consulate in Barcelona like a homing pigeon. A simple visa will be issued on the 6th. (If consulate called Tokyo immigration , that would have been the end of it) His flight is on the 8th. One stomach pain resolved.

“Lost is the echo of space.”

These words by Kazuo Shinohara are the title of an essay written in a period of rapid economic growth following the end of postwar reconstruction.
Today, when environmental issues have become a global problem, inequality is widening, and ethnic conflicts arise, the social requirements for architecture have become more complex. To respond to these requirements, architects continue to struggle intellectually and creatively. On the other hand, the opportunities to refer to space seem to be diminishing. What will be the role of space in the architecture of the future? This symposium aims to address this question through a dialogue between architects in Japan, the birthplace of Kazuo Shinohara, and architects in Switzerland, where Kazuo Shinohara’s influence is evident.
