I read Ecology without Nature: Rethinking Environmental Aesthetics 2007 by Timothy Morton. Although this is a tough book, the essence seems clear, which is a condemn of beautification of nature, and acceptance of nature as it is. He called it a dirty ecology. This term sounds like dirty realism in literature and architecture. His thought seems to bring us what the reality is. This thinking is similar to those of other OOO(object-oriented ontology) philosophers.
translating software
Lately, I’ve been writing English first and then translating it into Japanese using translation software. If you do so, you can’t use it as it is. It becomes strangely strained Japanese. In some cases, my English is not good, but in many cases, it is due to the limitations of the translation software. That’s what happens when you create English with translation software, so it’s going to take some time.
reading seminary
Reading seminary in the Sakaushi laboratory has two tables. One is about architecture, the other one is not. Yesterday’s architecture table was Hiroshi Matsukuma’s “The Eve of Architecture,” and the non-architecture table was Hiroyuki Horihata’s “Clothes of Words.” Last year we did these two tables in one room, one here and one there, but this year we’re doing them in the breakout room at ZOOM. In one place, there is the person in charge of the regime and the other person in charge of discussion moderating. I didn’t get a sneak peek yesterday due to another ZOOM conference, but I’ll go to see it next week.
Bubble economy
Five or six years after I joined Nikken, my manager told me to organize a monthly study session and an architectural tour in turn. So, I invited a lecturer to give a lecture. Since it was the year of the completion of Ryoma Memorial Hall, we asked Ms. Takahashi. We asked Mr. Sei Takeyama, who built OXY in the previous year and asked Ms. Sejima, who built Saishunkan Hall in the last year. Because they are young and unknown among the old architects of Nikkenthere, about 2-30 people were listening to it. Because of the bubble economy, my boss and I took our guests to eat tempura at Tenko in Kagurazaka and drove them back by car. After that, the study meeting became the whole of Nikken, and Bernard Tschumi and Emilio Ambers came, and Mr. Hayashi did the last one.
Postgraduate students
The number of fourth-year students of the daytime, which was five last year, increased to 11 this year, and all of them hoped for further education when I conducted a survey. None of them want to find jobs. Is ‘it’s caused by corona? However, since the quota of graduate students is 7, not all of them could enter. I will zoom interview them first.
Koma of Shogi
Today was the first day of the semester in TUS. We managed to do it with my colleague Kayanoki through Zoom. Two seminaries of reading and one-hour design were also successful. I felt easy. I played with Koma of Shogi after dinner.
Seminary
A seminary in Skaushi laboratory consists of three different ones, which are one for thesis, one for reading and one for one-hour design. I wondered if we could make the latter two through zoom, but we did it. I gage the issue by zoom, and they drew for one hour and uploaded them to google drive. The topic today was to add 15squaremeters to the house of the 30 square meters by Masada.
practice and theory
Infection clinicians in the U.S. have pointed out that the situation in Norway, which has urban blockades, and Sweden, which does not, are almost identical in terms of infection, and that there is a vast difference in economic conditions.
They point out the fallacy in the logic of the pundits who support the blockade with their descriptive arguments without clinical experience. Of course, they will also give you a warning and various measures, but they assure you that there is no need for a complete blockade or stay home.
The doctoral dissertation written by the American educator I’m currently reviewing raises the issue of the disconnect between architectural practice and logic. I believe that practice and philosophy must always run in parallel. Therefore it is necessary to listen to both the opinion of the clinician and that of the non-clinical researcher.
