水曜日、学会の研究協議会で増田友也研究の司会をする。増田とは縁もゆかりもない私がにわか勉強をしている。もうすぐ刊行される増田モノグラフの膨大なゲラも読ませていただいた。彼の生前の唯一の著書『建築的空間の原始的構造』はその昔早稲田の古本屋で見つけ斜め読みしていた。建築は視覚的対象ではなく、実存的存在であると言う増田の主張に共感したし、触覚時代を先取りしていたと言わざるをえない。しかし今回の学びで分かったことは思想はもとより、設計者としての確かな力量である。今まであまり正確に日本近代建築史に位置付けられて来なかったのは彼の宣伝不足によるところもあるが、彼の哲学的な思索と建築実体を架橋するわかりやすい言葉が、見つけにくいからだったのではと私には思われる。明後日そんな言葉が見つかるとうれしい。On Wednesday, I will be moderating a study on Tomoya Masuda at the AIJ research council. I, who have no connection or relationship with Masuda, am suddenly studying. I also read the huge manuscripts of Masuda’s soon-to-be-published monograph. His only book before his death, “The Primitive Structure of Architectural Space,” was found in a used bookstore in Waseda University and I read it sideways. I sympathized with the idea that architecture is not just a visual object, but an existential entity, and I must say that he was ahead of the tactile era. However, what I learned through this study was not only his philosophy but also his solid ability as a designer. The reason why he has not been placed very accurately in the history of modern Japanese architecture is partly due to a lack of publicity by him, but it is also because it is difficult to find easy-to-understand words that bridge his philosophical speculations and architectural substance. So it seems to me. I would be happy if I could find such words the day after tomorrow.

来週学会で京都。司会は二つあるがお目当ては学生との寺巡り。夏休みだいぶ予習して見たい建物四つ。桂、東大寺、興福寺、當麻寺。楽しみ。
I’ll be in Kyoto for a conference next week. I have to conduct two MCs, but the purpose is to tour temples with students. I’ve spent a lot of time preparing for this summer vacation to find four buildings that I want to see. Katsura, Todaiji, Kofukuji, Taimaji. fun?

ヨットに乗って風の塔を見に行く予定だったが台風の風が残りちょっと危険ということで中止。残念だけど今日1日でいろんなことが楽になった。あれもこれも終わらせられる。We were planning to go on a yacht to see the Wind Tower, but the typhoon’s winds were still lingering and it was a little dangerous, so we canceled. It’s a shame, but a lot of things became easier today. You can end this and that.

ユハ二・パッラスマーは本書『建築と触覚』を2012年に書いた。『経験としての建築』の著者デンマークのスティン・アイラー・ラスムッセンの影響を受け、ハイデッガーの「場の存在論」に影響を受けたノルウェィーの歴史家ノルベルグ・シュルツの思想が本書で発展した。またアメリカのケネス・フランプトン、イギリスのコリン・セント・ジョン・ウィルソンとの対話が彼をして建築の地方性に目を向かせ、リベスキンドからバシュラールを学び、スティーブン・ホール、アルベルト・ペレス・ゴメスと共有していたアイデアが本書の出発点になったという。
一言で言えば建築を現象学的、実存的に捉えることで視覚中心主義を否定する彼の思想はこうした人の文脈の上にあるということをピーター・マッキースによる解説で知った。Juhani Pallasmaa wrote the book “Architecture and Tactility” in 2012. Danish author of Architecture as Experience, Stijn Eiler Rasmussen,　 influenced him. This book also develops the idea of “ontology of place.” Norwegian historian Norberg Schulz, whom Heidegger influenced. Conversations with Kenneth Frampton of the United States and Colin St. John Wilson of England made him pay attention to the regional characteristics of architecture, and he studied Bachelard with Libeskind and with Stephen Holl and Alberto Pérez Gómez. The ideas they shared became the starting point for this book.
In short, I learned from Peter MacKeith’s commentary that his ideas, which reject visual centrism by viewing architecture from a phenomenological and existential perspective, are based on the context of these people.
