At the Spanish Royal Palace Collection Museum, from the entrance you have to go around this huge slope four times to reach the exhibition room. “Madrid is a cliff,” ETSAM dean Manuel Blanco says as we descend speaking about its history. A museum built on the edge of a cliff creates a new cliff.

I left the assignment for this workshop to the Spanish team. Partly because I was busy and partly because I wanted to know what they would think. Their assignment was a building analysis. At first I wondered what they were going to do, but the Spanish students were well versed in analyzing materials, form, context, structure, function, history, and so on, without hesitation. There was no waste of time in their work, and while the Japanese students were struggling, the PowerPoint presentation was being prepared for the final presentation. The final product, which they produced in the shortest possible time, was a masterpiece. They must be Spain’s elite. All Spanish students are in the fifth grade of their final year. Japanese students are in their first, second, or third year, so naturally their knowledge and techniques are different. In addition, they know more about Japanese architecture. I am impatient because Japanese students these days really don’t know anything. How many of them would have felt the value of having Rafael Moneo come to the site ? I think that Japanese students as well as educators should be more and more sensitive to the world situation so that Japan does not become a third-rate country in terms of both economy and education.

There is a book written by Rafael Moneo about pillars. His roots at Atocha Station are told. That design is my favorite.

During the workshop, five teams will analyze five different buildings. One of them is Rafael Moneo’s Bankinter. The key is how to show respect to the palace that remains on the site and neighboring buildings. We were fortunate to have Rafael come to the site and explain things to us. Although he is 87 years old, he continues to talk for about 30 minutes and is in good spirits. This is the first time since he came to Japan after winning the Prince Takamatsu Prize. My respect for him is increasing.

Work will be sent to you no matter where you are. The second proofreading of the translated book and the first proofreading of the architecture study book have arrived. Calculate the time it takes to look at the content and revise it before replying. There are still two proofreads scheduled to come. I pray that it doesn’t come.
