Takeshi Umehara, who was the same age as my father, stayed in Kyoto after thinking about leaving his hometown of Kyoto when he entered university. The reason is that he thought that if he went to Tokyo, he would (at that time) be busy at thinkig which he should choose the establishment or the anti-establishment, and could not do cultural studies leisurely. It is true that the many graduates of University of Tokyo are in the political and business world, and the University of Kyoto has many graduates in the cultural sector. It’s no wonder that there are many Nobel laureates from Kyoto University.
