親父にああしろこうしろと言われたことはほとんどないが、兄貴が早稲田高等学院から政経学部に進みたいと言った時と、僕が芸大に言って陶芸をやりたいと言った時は頑として突っぱねられ、「手に職をつけて自律せよ」と言われた。自分は大学で経済学を学んできたのにと二人の息子は納得がいかなかった。しかし親父に言われたことはそのまま子供達への教えとなり娘には大学を出たら自律せよと小さい時から言ってきた。そうしたら早稲田大学の卒業式の次の日、娘は自活しますと家を出て行ったのである。

My father rarely told me to do this or that. Still, when my brother told the father that he wanted to study political science and economics at Waseda Senior High School. And when I told him that I wanted to study pottery at Geidai, he stubbornly refused and told us to get skills and become autonomous. My two sons were not convinced, as he had studied economics at university. However, what my father told me became a lesson to my children, and I told my daughters from a young age that she should be self-reliant once she finished university. The day after she graduates from Waseda University, she left home, saying she would live on her own.

子供の頃、親父が何の仕事をしているのか知らなかった。聞いてみると、高校の先生をしているとのことで、たまに教え子らし人が家で飲んでいたりするので、先生なのかなとは思っていた。しかし毎日規則正しく出勤しているところは見たことがないし、夜も見たことがなかった。ほとんど母子家庭。というか父親とは家にいないものだと思っていた。だから、結婚するときに「家では夕飯は食べない」と配偶者に言い実際ほぼ食べたことは無かった。娘は自分の過去を振り返って「お父さん（私）は家にいないもの」と思っていたという。血は争えないものである。

When I was a kid, I didn’t know what my father did for a living. When I asked him about it, he said he was a teacher at a high school, and I thought he was a teacher because he sometimes had students who looked like his pupils drinking at home, but I never saw him going to work regularly every day, and I never saw him at night. I thought it was almost a mother-and-son family, or rather, I thought that fathers were not supposed to be at home. That’s why when I married my spouse, I told her that I would not eat at home, and my daughter, looking back on her past, thought that her father (me) was never at home. Hearing that, I thought I couldn’t fight blood.

若返り

学会の小委員会とWGの主査幹事を総入れ替えするべく、推薦してお願いやっと６人の了承と皆の合意が得られた。平均年齢５６歳が４７歳に若返った。日建の先輩が「社長の一番大事な仕事の一つは次の社長を決めることだ」と言っていた。そこまで大それたものではないけれど、委員会も似たようなところがある。
We finally got the approval of six people to replace all the chair secretaries of the subcommittees and working groups of the Architectural Institute of Japan. The average age of the members, which was 56, was reduced to 47. One of my seniors at Nikken told me that one of the most important jobs of a president is to decide who will be the next president. It’s not that big a deal, but the committee is similar.

親父の教えと林昌二の教え

「やりたくないことをするな」と言う親父の教えと「頼まれたら断るな」と言う林昌二の教えは両立しない。なのでやりたくないことを頼みそうな人とは距離を置く方がいい。それでも頼まれたらやるしか無い。それだけ好かれたと思って。
My father’s teaching, “Don’t do what you don’t want to do,” and Shoji Hayashi’s teaching, “Don’t decline when asked,” are incompatible. So it’s better to stay away from people who might ask you to do something you don’t want to do. Still, I have no choice but to do it if asked. We should think youn are liked that much.

角窓の家

さまざまな出隅、入隅に窓をつけた家<角窓の家〉を考えていた時に描いていたスケッチ。モノグラフに載せたかったが載らなかったのでお見せします。こんな穴だらけだと壁構造が成り立たないと金箱さんに叱られた。

Sketches I drew when I was thinking of a house with windows in various outside and inside corners. I wanted to put them on the monograph, but they didn’t, so I’ll show you. Mr. Kanebako scolded me that the wall structure would not be possible if there were many holes like this.

 

競争

先日資本主義は見限ったと書いたが、資本主義批判は「競争」批判であってはならないと言うクリストフ・リュトゲの競争の倫理を読み納得した。リバタリアニズム的な野放図な競争と国家統制的な状態の中庸としての適切なルールの下での競争である。

I wrote the other day that I had given up on capitalism. Still, Christophe Lutgé’s ethics of competition convinced me which says that a critique of capitalism must not be a critique of “competition.” But a critique of competition under proper rules, as a middle ground between the heated battle of libertarianism and the state-controlled state.

Sonohara

篠原研の同級生辺見浩久が僕のモノグラフを見て篠原スケッチに驚いたとメールをくれた。大小の窓のこのスケッチが篠原一男の何かにそっくりだと言う。残念ながら、スチュアート先生が指摘する通り、篠原一男もチャールズムーアも無意識に現れることはある。

Hirohisa Henmi, a classmate of Shinohara Lab, sent me an email saying that He was surprised at Shinohara-like sketch when Ihe saw my monograph. He says that this sketch of large and small windows looks exactly like Kazuo Shinohara’s. Unfortunately, as Dr. Stewart points out, both Kazuo Shinohara and Charles Moore can appear unconsciously.
