隣地との隙間に浴室の樹脂木の余りを２枚置いていたらその間から花が咲いた。

I put two pieces of resin wood left over from the construction of the bathroom in the gap with the adjacent land, flowers bloomed between them.

新四年生に聞かれた。「正しい建築の学びかたとは何ですか」と「それは君にとって」と聞いたら「先生にとって」と言う。それなら僕の座右の銘は「理論なき実践は盲目であり、実践なき理論は空虚である」とカントの言葉を伝えた。おそらく僕はずっとこう考えて建築を学んできたしこれからもそうしたい。

I was asked by a new fourth grader.  When asked, “What is the correct way to learn architecture?”I asked “It’s for you,” he says, “For the teacher.”  In that case, my motto is “Practice without theory is blind, and theory without practice is empty,” Kant said.  Perhaps I’ve been studying architecture with this in mind, and I want to continue doing so.

Fedexでモノグラフが届いた。数冊ずつこプチプチに包まれ段ボール箱に入りガムテープでぐるぐる巻きである。しかし輸送中放り投げられ箱はどれも破けている。しかし恐る恐る開けてみると角はピンとしている。fedexのノウハウだろうか。

A monograph arrived by Fedex. Several volumes are wrapped in bubble wrap, placed in a cardboard box, and wrapped with gum tape. However, they were thrown during transportation and all the boxes were torn. But when I opened it, the corners were pinned. Is it fedex know-how?

今朝の結露はすごい。それほど寒く無いのに。

編集後記を送付してJIAマガジン3月15日号はそろそろ校了。今月号の「建築が生まれる時」は、青木淳さんが1995年に作られた馬見原橋のスケッチである。橋を上下に分岐させ、橋の下に溜まり場を作りながら、それが構造的にも有効に働くように考えた経過が、ここに表れている。インタビューでは、磯崎事務所に入った経緯から、独立、度々反転の意味について聞いた。それは建築の自律性を生み出す自己言及性の表れであるということに驚いた。コトをモノにするプロセスがきちんと存在しているところが青木さんの魅力であると再確認した。

The post-editorial note has been sent, and the 15th March issue of JIA Magazine is almost finished. This month’s issue, “When Architecture is Born,” features a sketch by Jun Aoki of the Mamihara Bridge, built in 1995. It shows how to make the bridge branch up and down, creating a reservoir underneath the bridge while also making it structurally effective. In the interview, we asked him about the meaning of reversals. I was surprised to learn that it is a sign of self-referentiality that creates the autonomy of architecture. I was reconfirmed that Aoki’s appeal lies in the fact that the process of turning an event into a thing exists appropriately.

10年くらい前にコーネル大学の日系アメリカ人が研究室を訪ねてきて拙著の英訳を勧めてくれた。曰く日本語の本は世界では存在していないのに等しいと。しかし自分の能力の限界もありなかなか難しく、博士論文の英語要約、私家版グラフィック英語版、建築の設計力を半分バイリンガルにするのがやっとだった。しかし今回のモノグラフでやっと国外でも存在するものが作れた。世界の友から反応がありそのことを実感する。

About 10 years ago, a Japanese-American from Cornell University visited the laboratory and recommended me an English translation of my book. He says that Japanese books do not exist in the world. However, due to the limitations of my ability, I only could make my doctoral dissertation English summary, private graphic book English version, and the ability of architectural design half bilingual. However, I finally made something that exists abroad. I realize that because there is a reaction from friends all over the world.
