During the time of sociality of architecture, it sounds anachronistic to talk about form, but as Jencks points out, organic, curved lines come in cycles of 40 years. Iron and Art Nouveau at the beginning of the century, concrete and shell in the 1950s, biomorphism in the 1990s, and perhaps the next free architecture will appear in 2030s. AU will influence it. A master’s student is writing a thesis on curved architecture, and this may be due to the hunch.
On a different note, I paid a £150 subscription to Architectural Review for that master thesis, and was surprised to find that I was able to view every page from its first issue in 1891.

On October 8, 2023
by 卓 坂牛

Graham Harman says that the sensory properties of objects are contingent and that we should look beyond that and see reality that does not usually appear. It means that we should look at the object itself rather than interpret objects in terms of their relationships or physical properties. It is similar to Susan Sontag’s teaching, “Don’t interpret, but sense the formality” (anti-interpretation). As I who thinks about how to interpret things, I get a bit bewildered when I read something like this.

I went to hear Tetsuo Nishizawa’s lecture with six students from my lab. Full. When asked, “If you could create a completely new building as かyou like, what would you do?” he stubbornly answered, “Organize the conditions that pop up from around you,” insisting on the heteronomy of architecture. Daisuke Furusawa, who I bumped into at the exit, muttered, “That sounds like Tetsuo,” so I agreed.

Love2house

I had chance to look at Love2house. In addition to the proportions of the interior space, the opening to the street made this small house felt several times larger. Susan Sontag wrote half a century ago to stop trying to interpret things and just feel things, and when I come to a space like this, I honestly feel that way. Thank you, Mr. Hosaka and his wife.
