道の駅視察で我孫子へ。シンプルな形がほんの少しの操作で豊かになるものだと感心することしきり。構造も鉄をこんなに上手に細く使うんだと勉強になりました。ディスプレイのシステムも上手いなあ。Head to Abiko for a roadside station inspection. I was amazed at how a simple shape can be enriched with just a few manipulations. I learned that the structure uses iron so skillfully and thinly. Display system is also nice.
分割と連結

日本の古い建築は部屋を襖で分割できるように作られている。襖を開けると一つの大きな部屋になる。そんな作りを現代的な設計に取り入れたのが篠原一男のから傘の家である。あの家に入ると7メートル角の正方形という全体形が先ず感じられる。そして襖を閉めると家は二つに分けられる。篠原の初期作品はこうした分割を意図的に作った。そしてこういう風にまず全体形が感じられて、それがある装置で分けられることを知る場合、この空間は「分割されている」と「感じる」。一方ビザンチンの教会堂建築のようにドームの中央空間をメインにして小型のドーム空間が複数周りを取り巻く建築はその全体形より以前にそれぞれのドーム空間に目がいく。つまり全体より部分を先に感得する。こういう場合はこの空間は「連結されている」と「感じる」。しかし日本の空間でも例えば桂離宮のような書院が雁行しながら連続している空間はそれぞの書院の独立性が強いからきっとあの中に入れば「連結されている」と「感じる」のではないか（あの中を歩いたことはないので正確には分からないが）。またパウル・フランクルがいうようにバロック教会堂の空間のように楕円形の全体形をまず感じるような空間では、分けられた空間は「分割されている」と「感じる」のだ。篠原一男が博論で指摘した日本空間は「分割」西洋空間は「連結」と結論づけるのはやや早計で、「全体」と「部分」のどちらに形のまとまりがあって、それによってどちらを先に感得するかが「分割」と「連結」を「感じる」要因なのではないかと思う。Old Japanese architecture is designed to divide rooms by sliding doors. When you open the fusuma, it becomes one big room. Kazuo Shinohara’s Karakasa House is a modern design incorporating such a structure. When you enter the house, you first notice the overall shape of the seven-meter-square square. And when the fusuma is closed, the house is divided into two. Shinohara’s early works deliberately created such a division. And when you first feel the whole shape in this way and know that it is divided by a particular device, you ‘feel’ that this space is ‘divided. ‘On the other hand, in Byzantine church architecture, where the central dome space is the main space, and multiple small dome spaces surround it, the eyes are drawn to each dome space before the overall shape. In other words, we perceive the part before the whole. This space is “connected” and “feels” in such a case. However, even in Japanese rooms, for example, in an area like the Katsura Imperial Villa, where the shoin continues to fly in a row, each shoin is strongly independent, so if you enter it, you will “feel” that rooms are “connected.” (I’ve never walked through it, so I don’t know exactly). Also, as Paul Frankl said, in a space where you first perceive an elliptical overall shape, such as the space of a baroque church, you ‘feel’ that the divided space is ‘divided.’ It is a little premature to conclude that Japanese space is “divided” and Western space is “connected,” which Kazuo Shinohara pointed out in his doctoral thesis. I think that it is a factor to “feel,” “division,” and “connection,” depending on how you perceive it.
スピード感

この10年間くらいで単著、共著、監訳、鼎談、など結構たくさんの本を書いたが、それらに大した感想や意見を頂いたことはなかった。しかし今回はだいぶ様子が違う。あれよあれよと丁寧なご意見感想をたくさん頂いている。1000円を切る定価、10000部を超える部数が効いている。
新書には新書の書き方があってアカデミックな本に慣れている人からするとちょっと乱暴だと思う向きもあるかもしれないが、短い本の中で端的に物を伝えるための工夫は必要なのである。しかしそれにしても展開が早いというのは割と皆さんの共通した感想で（だから多くの情報が入っているのだが）既に書き始めた次の本ではスピード感についてはよく考えないといけないなと思っている。
Over the past 10 years or so, I have written several books per year, including single authors, co-authors, supervised translations, and three-part talks, but I have not received much feedback or opinions on them. But this time things are a little different. We have received a lot of polite opinions and impressions. The list price of less than 1,000 yen and the number of copies exceeding 10,000 are effective. Shinsho has its own style of writing, and some people who are accustomed to academic books may find it a little rough, but it is necessary to devise ways to convey things in a short book. However, even so, everyone has a common impression that the development is fast (which is why it contains a lot of information). In the new book I’ve already started writing, I think I’ll think about it carefully
