On June 13, 2021
by 卓 坂牛

When I came to The National Art Center, Tokyo, the “Fashion in Japan 1945-2020” exhibition that I wanted to see had begun. This is probably the first such historical exhibition. I feel nostalgic as if I were looking at my own history. I think it’s hard to say that new fashion is nicer and cooler than the old ones. Even so, it changes. What on earth will change fashion? Is it an autonomous force or society or  the dynamics of the industry? This question is directly directed to architecture. Why does architecture change?

I saw the calligraphy of my spouse, her teacher Shinzan Kamijō, his teacher Eisho Miyajima, and his teacher Chorenkei at the National Art Center, Tokyo. This is the first time I’ve seen Miyajima’s work. The outline is square and the inside is soft.

JIA interview

At JIA Magazine’s architect interviews I I have interviewed more than  30 people. So I asked the doctoral students seminar yesterday about whom they were interested and what they weren’t. Surprisingly, they aren’t interested in architects who are almost older than me. They are not interested in big names. The exception is Kazunari Sakamoto. That would be because it’s my lab. Tomorrow is an undergraduate and master’s seminar, so I will ask again.

X線

On June 12, 2021
by 卓 坂牛

When Colomina came to NYIH in 1980, it was just after Susan Sontag who was a senior researcher published “Illness as Metaphor”. She tried to study the effects of pathology on modernism architecture, but she decided it was premature and ended up a media studies of Le Corbusier and Loos. However, it seems that this was not yet accepted by the architectural world at that time. After all, the architectural world is always behind. Having the 2019 sabbatical, Colomina challenged her desire to rethink modernism 40 years ago. And she made this book entitled X-ray architecture. The transparency of architecture and the transparency of human beings by X-rays, which was popular in tuberculosis, became widespread in parallel. This book, which seeks to approach the relationship between the two, is a thrilling translation of modernism that follows the white wall of Wigley we have just completed the translation. This book would be the next we should translate.

Mathematical sublime which teaches the power of the size of thing is a must-read concept for architectss, but Kant’s sublime can only be directed to large things, Lyotard uses the concept of presence in deciphering Kant’s theory of sublime. This is also focused on the smallness of things (Professor Otabe interprets). This is even more architectural. And the power of the size of the current architecture is not just to be big or small, but to look big or small. This is a concept that transcends sublime.

A donut shop in the neighborhood opens occasionally.  On the opening day, a cactus is placed in front of the bay window 🌵.

Yesterday’s one-hour design was the task of remodeling Terunobu Fujimori’s Tanpopo house into a house that coexists with different plants. Surprisingly, Those who chose the same plant were only two they chose grapes and the rest were all different plants. It was morning glory, banana, herbs, wisteria, turf, vine, plum, moss, satsuki, bonsai, banyan tree, bitter gourd, and small plants. There is such a thing.

間違い

by 卓 坂牛

It was sent to me as the first proof of book review. My name was written “坂上”. At the committee of the AIJ, the chairman called me “牛坂” all the time. When I looked at the register of the land of Fujimi that I inherited the other day, my father’s name was “坂井”. Those are the best 3 of the wrong name.
