Ten years ago, Our mother passed away and father cleared house in Oizumi to create a house to live with his brother’s family and started living. He wouldn’t have lived for 10 years without the devoted support of my sister-in-law. Every New Year, we went to the tomb of mother and ate blowfish. This is a New Year’s photos that remains on my blog.

My brother asked me if it was OK to throw away all my dad’s possessions except for his books. I said yes, but I remembered that he had a lot of pens. I got a Pelikan, my spouse and daughter got a Mont Blanc as a memento. It’s very smoothe to

write with.

My father wrote his first book at the age of 80 when he was president of the Socialist Society. It begins with a review of the material dialectic, the theory of capitalism, the idea of neoliberalism, the reasons for the collapse of the Socialist Party, and Japan’s prospects. It was a small book, but it was 300 pages long. At that time, my father went to the library every day and took a lot of notes. He used the same method as Marx. The postscript says that he wrote the book in two months in the middle of summer. I was amazed at how quickly he could write a book. I wrote my book in two years. Six years later, he wrote his next book. It was also not an essay but a theory. I thought I would work until 75, but I think I might make it to 85.

My father, who was a former member of  Hirosaki High School ski club, took his family to ski every winter and spring. I usually was left alone at the ski resort, and at one point I fell into a valley and got stuck and was saved in the evening. However, the children got better quickly and we were surprised that I passed the first grade of ski licensing examination when I was in the sixth grade.of elementary school.

My father did not have a particular attitude towards his grandchildren or us. When he was working, he would ignore his grandchildren when they went to his room to play. The grandchildren would hang out in his room, and when they were about to leave, he would say “Oh” to them. My daughter had the nerve to argue with him that socialism would not work in Japan, and he was happy to oblige.

In his eulogy, my brother said that my father slapped him and spattered fresh blood on the wall. I remember him standing on a desk and hit on his shin with a six-foot bamboo ruler. He was driven into the bathroom and beaten so severely that his nose bled all over the tiles.

At the funeral, We gathered up all the photos of my father and laid them out. Among them, this one caught my eye. I had rarely seen my father smile. I don’t remember it. At the funeral, my brother and I talked about how rare a picture this was.

My dad was the Socialist Association head (the theoretical research group of the Socialist Party) from 1998 to 2016. I wondered how he felt about this job after the Berlin Wall had already fallen, but for him, it was nothing. In the end, he was fighting for the improvement of the status of workers. At his funeral, my brother said that my father lived his whole life by his convictions, and I think he was right. This face, barking at society, is the most fatherly face of us all. He was a tremendously scary man.
