On December 11, 2020

Miri Ryu’s “JR Ueno Station Park Exit” depicts the misfortune of Tohoku people who went to work in Tokyo in the first half and the miserable lives of those who were affected by the disaster in the second half of Tohoku. Ueno Park is used for the stage because the migrant hero has eventually became homeless. There are many possibilities to derail from the rails of life. A society where you drop out of high school, drop out of college, are dismissed, but don’t have a chance to get on a different rail from there is unbearable.

I brought back home Giedion’s “Space, Time, and Architecture” from the laboratory to write the preface to the translated book. When I opened the page, there was a nostalgic “sakaushizosho” mark. I bought this book when I graduated from high school and borrowed the seal of my father and pushed it. I want this mark if it still exists.

It is the architect’s mission to create shapes based on reality by Kazunari Sakamoto, which is called critical formalism. It is a word that warns the architect’s excessive sociality. In fact, Michael Hayes contributed “Critical Architecture: The Between Culture and Form” to Perspector vol21 in 1984 about the role of an architect in this form and society, and preaches autonomous form and architecture as a tool of culture. .. Adorno and Horkheimer described the duality of art autonomy and sociality. I have made a similar claim in my recent book.

Philip Johnson

It was in 1966 that Ventury said that simplicity was effective when it contained complexity, but about 20 years back, Philip Johnson held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1947 Mies van der Rohe exhibition. He also published a book of the same name, where he praised Mies’s simplicity as being born of complexity. I feel the eyes of reading the era of Philip Jonso, as if he had predicted the Venturi 20 years later.

On December 7, 2020

Looking over the Tokyo bay  area from Yurikamome, new condominiums are built everywhere, and it seems that they are selling well to young people. Our generation is screaming at the terrible town, but young people may like this wilderness landscape. The origin of New Urbanism, which denied modern city planning started from Prince Charles’ claim. When you become old you come to like stability if the scenery, whereas  young people may prefer chaos. And both chaos and wilderness stabilize over time. Toyoshu, which was a wilderness, is now a town.
