I got in touch with Mr. Sakamoto’s atelier. I was surprised at how much work he has done because I haven’t seen it for a long time. I heard about them for 5 hours. And I decided to have an interview. The theme is scale and hierarchy. From 100 m2 to 1 million m2.

On September 3, 2020

This month’s issue of JIA Magazine, “When Architecture is Born,” looks uncharacteristically architectonic. It is a copy of the cover of Lévi-Strauss’s “Structural Anthropology” and Hannah Arendt’s “The Human Condition,” along with copies of the essential pages. These two books gave birth to Yamamoto’s gourd-shaped scheme for the concept of the community within a community, which is the starting point of his architecture, and it was these two books that led to its development. I had seen Arendt’s book in a video of Mr. Yamamoto’s Nagoya Zokei University class. Amid the corona crisis, Mr. Yamamoto was explaining the ideas of Hannah Arendt powerfully. It was a very moving moment.

I noticed that I had forgotten to change my address in several official documents, more than a year after I moved. Mysteriously passport and insurance card are the end if you double-line the old address and write the new address yourself. I have to go to the police station for the driver’s license, but it is strange that the evidence of the new address can be the insurance card that I rewrote. With this, you can live anywhere.

On September 2, 2020

I was a bit surprised to compile a record of my overseas lectures for a monograph. In the nine years since I came to Tokyo University of Science, I have given classes, workshops, and exhibitions at 27 universities and organizations abroad, until last year. Those have always been with students. That meas I went to several cities in one year. This year I have stayed at home, but I have had a chance to go to the world by Zoom, so it was fun. But I want to touch the real culture with my students again. I want to go to the Czech Republic, where I missed to go in March

Sumito building

My late boss in the Nikken era is Toei Yuzaki, a modernist who loves cigarettes and straightforward personality and was in charge of the Sumitomo Triangle Building.  When l look at that building I can’t help but remember him. That straight ball design is Mr. Yuzaki. Since I came near, I went into the large space  that was recently added. I was glad that Yuizaki’s taste was inherited.

On August 31, 2020

Weisenhofsiedling is credited with defining the white of modernism. Mies, the exhibition director, sent a letter to the participants requesting that the building’s exterior is a pale color. He also asked the participating architects to keep the roof flat, which was only the rule, but rows of tofu buildings opened. The exterior of the building was painted a light color, just as Mies had requested. However, it is not strictly white. Both Mies and Le Corbusier made the building pink, and the interior is like a color chart. One of the few books that show such colors of siedlung’s buildings in color arrived today. I was surprised that a student won all of them when I gave a quiz at the Zoom seminar to find out which architect designed these buildings won all of them.

In translation, zoom meeting. The translation of the word Fantasy was discussed. You could translate it either 幻想or 空想. After all, there is no choice but to put in the original language if you can not decide.
For example, “空想社会主義” is a translation of utopian socialism, and it must mean ideales well.
Architecture such as Piranesi,Lequeu, are called “幻視の建築,” but this is a translation of visionary architecture and should also mean that the futuristic.
However, because I don’t know the appropriate Japanese word original word is needed to understand accurately.
