科学の真理 建築の真理

原発のようなものを見れば見るほど、科学は政治であることを実感します。そして、科学的真理の価値が社会(政治)によって作られたものであるというのは、もはや科学史の常識であり、一方で、科学には自律性がないわけではない。今問題になっているのは、この二つの極をどうやって乗り越えるかということである。この問題はブルデューの最終講義であり、彼に限らず多くの社会学者哲学者の思考である。それは建築においても重要な問題である。
The more I look at things like nuclear power, the more I realize that science is politics. The value of scientific truth is something created by society (politics) is the common sense of the history of science; on the other hand, there is no lack of autonomy in science. The question now is how to overcome these two poles. This matter is Bourdieu’s final lecture and the thinking of many sociologist philosophers, not just him. It is a significant problem in architecture, too.

かけがえの無さ

村上と柴田の『翻訳夜話』を読んだら村上がこう言う。小説家としての自分はかけがえがある。ここで自分が死んでも誰も困らない。でも翻訳家としての自分はかけがえがない。ここで自分が死ぬとカーヴァーの小説は誰もこうは訳せず、天国のカーヴァーにも読者にも迷惑がかかると。さて、自分はこの二人のレベルではもちろんないし、翻訳は副業とさえ言えるものでもないし、だいたい数人で一冊を訳すと言う分業体制だから、ただの翻訳工場の工場長である。しかし『言葉と建築』はあのチームでなければ訳せなかっただろうという自負はある。そして次のコンクリートの本が出た時これは宿命だと思った。もちろん次が出たらまた訳すだろう。ウィグリーはというとこれほど晦渋な英語を四年もかけて訳せていられるのは。数年前にシンポジウムで3日生活を共にしたらからである。確かに翻訳というのはある種のかけがえのなさのようなものに支えられているというのはそうだと思う。

When I read Murakami and Shibata’s “A Translation Notes,” Murakami says, I am invaluable as a novelist. No one will be bothered if I die here. But as a translator, I am irreplaceable. If I die here, no one will be able to translate Carver’s novel in this way, and it will be a problem for Carver in heaven and the readers. Now, I’m not at the level of these two, of course, and the translation is not even a sideline. It’s a division of labor, with several people translating a book, so I’m just a factory manager in a translation factory. However, I am proud that only that team could have turned “Words and buildings”. And when the next book on concrete came out, I thought it was fate. Of course, I will translate it again when the next one comes out. For example, In the case of Wigley’s book I could not have managed to translate such an obscure English book in four years. I spent three days with him at a symposium a few years ago. I think it’s true that a certain irreplaceableness supports translation.

その昔篠原建築思想に惚れ込んだとある大学の先生からメールをいただいた。それは昨今の篠原研究が構成論、形態論(大村のはその両方だけど)に終始して思想を追っていないことを嘆くものであった。それは事実である。しかし一方私が数年前主査をしたカタルーニャ工科大学に提出されたエンリックの博士論文「感情の5つの形―篠原一男と芸術としての住宅」は篠原思想を追っていた。海外にはそういう論文もある。言えば大村の論文は定量的分析でエンリックのそれは定性的分析である。

僕としては思想を追おうが、形を追おうがそんなことはどうでもいい。問題は分析対象の新しい解釈が導けるかどうかである。今まで知らなかった側面が見えるかどうかである。赤いリンゴを黒だと言えるかどうかである。

I received an email from a university professor who used to be in love with Shinohara’s architectural philosophy. He said that Shinohara’s research has become all about compositional theory and morphology (Ohmura’s work was both) and did not pursue a philosophy. It was a lament about the fact. That is true. But on the other hand, Enric’s doctoral thesis submitted to the Politecnico de Catalunya, where I was a president of the judging committee several years ago, “The Five Forms of Emotion: Kazuo Shinohara and the House as a work of art” followed Shinohara’s thought. There is something like this abroad. In other words, Ohmura’s thesis is a quantitative analysis, and Enric’s is a qualitative analysis.

For me, it does not matter whether he or she is chasing an idea or a form. What matters is whether or not he or she can derive a new interpretation of the object of analysis. The question is whether or not he or she can say that a red apple is black.

博士ゼミ

僕のもとで博士論文を書こうとしている人が四人いる。二週に一度ゼミをしている。先日公聴会を終えた大村は一週に二度ゼミをして半年に一本論文を書いた。ということは今の四人は二本の論文を書くのに四年かかる計算である。それでは過程内に終わらないのでもう少し頻繁にゼミをしようかと提案したが社会人はこれが限界のようである。まあこちらも限界だけど。

Four people are trying to write a doctoral thesis with me. They have a seminar every two weeks. Omura, who just finished a public hearing, had a lesson twice a week and wrote a paper every six months. That means it will take the current four of us four years to write two papers. I thought they would have to hold seminars a little more often because they would not be able to finish within the regular time, but this is the limit for working people. It seems to be. Well, it’s the limit for me, too.

海老名の家

昨日の1時間設計は小川次郎君の海老名の家が題材。この建物の特徴は宙に浮くチューブ状の寝室。そこで一旦このチューブをとって違うチューブを挿入して違う家にせよという課題。チューブは縦に入ったり斜めに入ったりいろいろである。Jiro Ogawa’s Ebina’s house was the subject of the one-hour design yesterday. The characteristic of this building is a tube-shaped bedroom floating in the air. So the challenge is to take this tube, insert a different tube, and create a new house. There are various types of tubes, including vertical and diagonal.

扇風機

除湿はしたい、でもクーラーつけると寒い、でも何もしないと不快なのでせんぷうき2台があっちこっちに風を流している。

I want to dehumidify, but it’s cold when I put on airconditioner, but it’s uncomfortable if I don’t do anything. So I use two fans.

縁側

富士吉田製氷工場を取り巻くコンクリートブロック塀は危ないし、建物との隙間は死んでいる。そこで取り払ってパンチングメタルの塀に衣替え。中川君と院生比佐で頑張った。現場はコロナでも進行中。アイロンワークが素晴らしい。早く梅雨のうちに植栽したい。

The concrete block wall surrounding the Fujiyoshida Ice Factory is dangerous, and the gap with the building is dead. So I removed it and changed to a punching metal fence. Nakagawa and graduate student Hisa did well.  The site is underway in Corona. The ironing work is wonderful. I want to plant early in the rainy season.

 

Daikon night

買い物に行こうかと思って冷蔵庫を見たら一昨日買った大根が一本あった。そこで大根ナイトに決めた。

1,大根千切りをブタスープと酒で煮でゴマをかける。ピリッとしないので柚エキスを、垂らした。

2, レンコンが残っていたので、酒、みりん、砂糖、で煮る。豚バラを入れたいが、ないので、ソーセージを入れてみた。今一である。

3、シーチキンとしょうが大きめを炒めてポン酢をかける。これは美味い。

When I looked at the refrigerator thinking that I should go shopping, there was one radish I bought the day before yesterday. So I decided to make radish night.

1, Slice the radish with pork soup and sake, and sprinkle with the sesame seeds. Since it doesn’t spicy, I dripped the yuzu extract.

2, There was lotus root remaining, so boil it with sake, mirin, and sugar. I want to add pork belly, but I didn’t, so I tried adding sausage. It’s the best now.

3, stir-fry sea chicken and ginger and sprinkle with ponzu sauce. This is delicious.

翻訳

翻訳は継続的にやっているが上達しない。たまにこういう翻訳の指南書を読んだりする。この本は東大の英文学の山本先生の翻訳論である。簡単言えば、翻訳と原文との間に文法的、語彙的生合成は不要で重要なのは同じ世界を共有することのみ。良い翻訳を見ると見事に原型はとどめていない。次回の翻訳はぜひこういう翻訳をしてみたい。

I’ve been translating continuously, but I’m not getting better. Sometimes I read this kind of guide book for translation. This book is a theory of translation by Professor Yamamoto, a professor of English literature at the University of Tokyo. In simple terms, there is no need for grammatical and lexical biosynthesis between the translation and the source text; the important thing is that they share the same world. Only that. A good translation shows that the original is not retained. I’d like to try this kind of translation for the next one.

出かける時は

最近寒い。今朝も20度を切っている。ウィンドブレーカーは出かける時の必需品。もう一つIKEAのミニバッグにジェル消毒液。

It’s been cold recently. It is below 20 degrees this morning. A windbreaker is an essential item when you go out. Another IKEA mini bag with gel disinfectant.
